Pet Licensing & Breeder Permits
Why Pet Licensing & Breeder Permits Matter – And How Tags Help!
To help keep our furry or fuzzy friends safe and healthy, our community has a pet licensing and breeder permit system in place. Here’s how it works – and why it’s important:
Pet License Tag – For Your Beloved Pet
When you license your dog, cat, ferret, or other pet, you’ll receive a special metal license tag. This tag comes with a unique ID number that matches your pet’s official license certificate. It’s easy to spot and made in a different color from breeder permit tags.
Why it matters:
- Helps animal control quickly reunite lost pets with their families.
- Proves your pet is vaccinated and protected against diseases like rabies.
- Supports local shelters and animal services.
- Keep pets safe and traceable.
- Support a healthier pet population.
- Strengthen community trust and animal welfare.

Breeder Permit Tag – For Responsible Breeding
If you plan to breed animals, you must register and apply for a breeder permit through Animal Control. Once approved, you’ll receive a metal breeder permit tag with its own ID number (matching your permit) – and it’s a different color than regular license tags.
- Each breeder permit is valid for one year and applies to just one animal.
- Breeders must also get a business tax receipt from the city to operate legally.
Why this is important:
Encourages responsible breeding and helps reduce pet overpopulation.
Ensures that breeding animals are healthy and well-cared for.
Helps track and regulate local breeding to prevent animal cruelty or neglect.
