The Edgewater Police Department operates under a Council/Manager form of municipal government. Located in Volusia County, the department has, as its primary mission, the safety and well being of the City’s 21,000 full-time residents. The Department consists of 33 full-time officers, 3 reserve officers and four civilian staff. In addition to traditional police services, we offer additional assistance with specific requests in a variety of areas, including vacant house watched, neighborhood watch coordination, business checks, and V.I.N. verifications.

The Edgewater Police Department is dedicated to the philosophy of Community Policing. By forming a partnership with the community to help solve problems of mutual concern, we strive to improve the quality of life for all our citizens.

Crime is not just a police problem, it is a community problem. By establishing and maintaining open communications with our residents, we can address their concerns. The Edgewater Police Department welcomes citizen input to help solve crime problems and quality of life problems in our community.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

Q: What can I do about speeding in my neighborhood?

A: The Edgewater Police Department invites requests for traffic enforcement, especially in residential areas. Simply call the main telephone number (386) 424-2427, or send an email to traffic@cityofedgewater.org and report the problem. Once a complaint is received, officers are notified and assigned to monitor speeds in the affected area.

Q: When and where can I get a copy of a police report?

A: The records division is located in the lobby of the police station at 135 East Park Avenue. You can normally obtain records Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

Q: How can I become a Police Officer?

A: We accept applications on a continual basis from individuals who hold a valid law enforcement certificate from the State of Florida or from officers who hold a valid certificate from another state and are eligible to obtain Florida standards within 12 months.

Q: I received a traffic citation I do not agree with. What can I do about it?

A: Once a citation is written, it is forwarded to the court clerk the next business day. No one in the police department, including the Chief of Police, is able to dismiss or withhold prosecution of a ticket. If you disagree with the ticket, you can challenge it in court. A copy of the citation identifies all your personal options.

Q: My home was broken into and it took an officer 15 minutes to respond. Why so long?

A: Calls for service are prioritized according to severity. Incidents that have already occurred and that do not have a suspect on the scene receive a non-emergency response. Our response times are very good, but sometimes officers are not available to handle every call the minute it is received. If your call is an emergency, our officers will make every effort to respond in a timely fashion.

Q: I saw a strange car in my neighborhood, but am unsure about calling the police when something like this happens.

A: The Police are here to serve you, but we cannot be everywhere at once. If you suspect anything out of the ordinary, please call.

Q: How do I get fingerprints?

A: Fingerprint services are available in the Records Division of the Edgewater Police Department. The Records Division is located in the lobby of the police station at 135 East Park Avenue. The normal hours for fingerprint services are Monday through Friday from 8:00AM - 4:00 PM. You must bring a fingerprint card and valid picture identification containing you signature and current address (i.e. Drivers License or Passport). The service fee for fingerprint services is $5 (includes 2 cards per person).
