| Pedestrian Safety |
As a pedestrian, you must always remember the vehicle’s driver, especially those of a large vehicle like a
semi-tractor trailer, may not see you until it is too late.
There are rules and regulations for pedestrians, just as there are for motor vehicle operators. Learn the rules for
pedestrian safety and avoid becoming a statistic.
Safety Tips:
- Cross intersections at crosswalks.
- Look both ways before crossing.
- At signalized crosswalks, wait for the proper signal.
- Watch for vehicles. Remember- you can see them easier them they can see you.
- Avoid crossing between parked vehicles.
- When there is no sidewalk and it is necessary to walk in the roadway, walk facing traffic.
- Never hitchhike.
- Plan and utilize the safest and most direct route to your destination.
- Choose well-lighted streets and avoid routes that pass by vacant lots, alleys or construction sites.
- If at night, wear reflective clothing or light colored clothing.
IF YOU THINK YOU ARE BEING FOLLOWED
BY A VEHICLE: Turn around and walk or run quickly in the opposite direction. Try to obtain the license tag
number and a description of the vehicle.
BY SOMEONE WALKING: Immediately cross the street and go in the opposite direction. Get over the fear of
being embarrassed, or thought of as "strange". Walk towards a place where there are likely to be other people. If
you choose to run, run as fast as you can and scream, "FIRE!" It gets the most immediate response.
