| Alarm Systems - Home, Business and Auto |
The installation of a burglar alarm system is a good deterrent to crime, whether it’s for your home, business or
vehicle. However, a determined thief will risk setting off an alarm to get what he or she wants. Therefore, it is
advised that your security should not be based solely on an alarm system. You still need to be aware of what’s
happening around you and report suspicious activity or person when observed.
Shopping for an alarm system? When thinking about purchasing an alarm, consider many factors. It could save you
time, trouble and even money if you don’t do your homework. Here are a few thoughts to consider before purchasing
a system:
- Is the company a local business? If so, how long have they been in business?
- What is their background history?
- Is the company a member of any local business organization? Check with your local Consumer Affairs Office or the
Better Business Bureau.
- Does the company offer 24 hour a day service in case of problems?
- Is there a warranty or maintenance contract for the system? Read it carefully.
- Is the system electrically or battery operated? In the event of a power failure, does it switch automatically to
battery power without activating the alarm?
- If the alarm is activated, will it automatically reset if attacked again?
- If the control switch of the box is exposed, will it activate the alarm if attacked?
- If it is a hardwire system (wires connecting sensor to control to alert) are the wires protected from attack or
unnecessary wear by the elements?
- If it a local system (audible in the immediate area) does it ring loud enough to attract the attention of others,
such as your neighbors?
- Does the system have a time delay, to activate and deactivate the alarm system without setting off the alarm?
- Is the system a Monitored System? Where is the monitoring station?
- Is the system Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL) approved?
RECOMMENDATION: Check with your friends and neighbors as to their systems. Are they happy with it? Ask about
services, etc.
