How Can I Help?

Volunteer - There is nothing as valuable as your time. Our volunteers are an essential part of our program and our efforts on behalf of the animals. The volunteers may work directly with the animals (cleaning, feeding, walking, socializing or being a foster parent) or may help with office or computer work. Volunteers are often needed to run errands, transport animals or serve during special events like mobile adoptions or fundraisers. If your area of expertise is anything from yard work to public speaking, we can use your help, and we can work around schedules. Volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian while volunteering at the shelter. Call us to arrange a quick meeting and tour of the shelter. It is impossible to express how important the volunteers are to our continued work. And as far as the pay......purrs and wags of appreciation, what could be better??!?!

Wish List - Some items are used on a regular, daily basis so these items are always needed:
  • Canned dog and Canned cat food
  • Paper Towels
  • Dog treats
  • Cat and Dog toys
  • Kitty Litter (the inexpensive kind)
  • Large, strong garbage bags
  • Bleach
  • Laundry Detergent
  • Degreaser (Like 409 or Greased Lightning)
  • Antibacterial dish soap
  • Antibacterial Hand soap
And needed some items change from time to time - we’ll do our best to keep this list updated.
  • A gas powered weed trimmer
  • Hand tools (screwdrivers, a hammer, etc)
  • Concrete blocks
  • Paint thinner
  • Door mats
  • Cardboard boxes that can be used as disposable kitty litter pans
  • Bandanas for the dogs to wear
  • A digital camera (fast speed, the animals are hard to photograph)
  • 1 ml syringes for giving vaccines (Insulin size syringes)
Recycle with us - Do your part for the environment and help Edgewater’s animals at the same time. We collect used ink jet and laser cartridges as part of the Cash for Critters program. The program also gives us money for old cell phones. If coming down to the shelter is not convenient, these items may be placed in the bin at the Fire Dept. on US1 or the food donation boxes in Winn Dixie or Publix. Cash for Critters has brought us several hundred dollars already.

Donate - Make a monetary donation to help us shelter and care for the nearly 1000 unwanted and abandoned animals each year. You may make your donation to:
The Pet Society
321 Sea Hawk Dr.
Edgewater, 32141

or

Honor a friend or a loved one with a tribute or memorial gift. A donation may be made in remembrance of a special person or pet. Recognize those that we care for while they are still with us with a tribute gift in their name. Donations may also be made to mark special occasions like birthdays or anniversaries. Letters of acknowledgement are mailed out to those involved to make them aware of your gift. Large memorial or honorarium donations may be made to the building fund.

Matching gift programs - Often employers or organizations are willing to match your donations, making your gift that much more valuable. Double your gift and inspire others to give by taking part in a matching gift program

Adopt - Loving homes are always needed for our great companion animals. Shelter animals make wonderful family members. Let your friends know that we are here and we adopt out healthy, loving, beautiful pets.

Purchase a Low Cost Spay/Neuter Certificate for the pet of a friend in need

Help prevent the birth of more animals who could potentially end up homeless. Certificates are available through the Pet Society and may be purchased at the shelter.

Spread The Word! - Link to our website so more people can find out about our efforts on behalf of the animals.
