Volunteering Opportunities

Becoming a volunteer with Edgewater Fire Rescue will provide a rewarding opportunity to support your community and the Fire Rescue Department. There are a wide variety of roles which volunteers can provide assistance to the Department. Please review the following job categories and see if one fits you.

  • Volunteer Firefighter - As a volunteer firefighter with the City of Edgewater you will have the opportunity to work with career members on a daily basis. Volunteer firefighters will be responding to medical emergencies, structure-vehicle-wildland fires, hazardous material scenes, water rescue, technical rescue, and motor vehicle accidents. Once trained, volunteer firefighters will be required to ride a minimum of 24 hours per month at one of the two fire stations. All required uniforms and personal protective equipment would be provided by the City.
    • Be at least 18 years old and possess a high school diploma or GED
    • Pass a federal background check
    • Have a clean driving record
    • Pass a physical and drug screen
    • Live with-in the greater Edgewater area
    • Attend and pass State volunteer firefighter program (160 hours)
    • Attend and pass First Responder (or higher) medical program (40 hours)
    • Attend departmental fire, medical, hazardous-material and technical rescue training (8 hours per month minimum).
  • Fire Service Chaplain - Fire Chaplains serve as departmental liaisons to the community. Department Chaplains assist the department and community members in times of need. They work with firefighters in finding assistance for department members and/or the community. Some of the specific tasks that the Chaplains may provide are responding to emergency scenes in order to provide assistance and attend official activities to serve as a department liaison.
    • Be at least 18 years old and possess a high school diploma or GED
    • Pass a federal background check
    • Have a clean driving record
    • Pass a physical and drug screen
    • Live with-in the greater Edgewater area
    • Must have ministerial qualifications.
  • Fire Support Member - Fire support members have a wide variety of roles. Some of the roles they provide are assistance to motor vehicle accidents (traffic control and clean-up), fire scene (rehab and scene control), assistance as a driver/engineer, Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic and wildland firefighter. Fire support members can perform any of the above roles that they are trained in. All required uniforms and personal protective equipment would be provided by the City.
    • Be at least 18 years old and possess a high school diploma or GED.
    • Pass a federal background check.
    • Have a clean driving record.
    • Pass a physical and drug screen.
    • Live with-in the greater Edgewater area.
    • Be trained in First Aid, CPR, and Infectious Control (minimum).
    • Receive training for the roles performed.
    • Attend departmental fire, medical, haz-mat, and technical rescue training as applicable.
  • Fire Administration Support - Fire administration support members will provide assistance in the office of the Fire Chief. The duties may include but not limited to answering phones, filing paperwork, assisting in public education, grant writing, photography and disaster assistance.
    • Be at least 18 years old and possess a high school diploma or GED
    • Pass a federal background check
    • Have a clean driving record
    • Pass a drug screen and physical if required.
    • Live with-in the greater Edgewater area
    • Be trained in First Aid, CPR, and Infectious Control (minimum)
    • Receive training for the roles performed
