Edgewater Fire-Rescue offers a variety of education resources to residents. Included in these
services are various courses, including CPR, Babysitting and First-Aid, among others.
Edgewater Fire-Rescue maintains a desire to keep the public aware of safe procedures and practices.
By special request and on several occasions each year, firefighters present fire safety programs to
anyone - from elementary-age students to senior citizens. "Sparky" the firedog makes special trips to
visit children and give tours of the fire trucks.
When there is a need for a program, fire officials try to develop a course appropriate for the
situation. Students from New Smyrna Beach High School participate in career shadowing and medical
academy opportunities through the department’s services.
The fire department stresses fire prevention is as many ways as possible. Each year, October marks
Fire Prevention Month. This year, firefighters and Edgewater Fire-Rescue Association members held a
breakfast to publicize fire prevention. After the breakfast, firefighters set up displays of fire
safety, as well as demonstrations, including vehicle extrication and equipment usage. The theme of
this year’s Fire Prevention Week was "Test Your Smoke Detectors," which Edgewater Fire-Rescue strongly
promoted.
Edgewater Fire-Rescue firefighters are willing to give station tours during normal business hours.
In addition, through their public information officer, Edgewater Fire-Rescue disseminates press
releases to the public through various media sources in times of disaster or significant emergency,
such as the hurricanes in the 2004 season.
The CPR courses offered through Edgewater Fire-Rescue vary according to one’s needs. Courses are
offered on both the healthcare provider level, which is more detailed and extensive, as well as on a
basic level, which covers basic adult CPR and general first-aid care.
The Babysitting Course is new to Edgewater Fire-Rescue’s curriculum of courses. So far, more than a
dozen students, ages 12-14 have successfully completed the course. Subject matters covered included
emergency first aid, child CPR, choking hazards and precautions, childproofing homes, appropriate
games to play for various age ranges and how to safely handle babies.
